Summarise the work you've done during Project 1 and reflect on your learning, citing any challenges and new motivations you discovered.
Reflection
Negatives -
At the beginning of Project 1 I struggled to ascertain exactly what it was that I wanted to explore in relation to the research conducted in Exercise 1.
I struggled initially with the research as I was re-adjusting to getting back into a routine of studying, however I enjoyed exploring the different aspects that could influence works.
When I reached Exercise 2, I had difficulty finding inspiration for collages/montages as this is usually a medium that I enjoy.
Finally I struggled with the time in which I needed to turn the work around in.
Positives -
I enjoyed learning and researching about the work of Akomfrah, his take on how he finds and works with his germinations was insightful and I enjoyed the research around other artists, and how I could build my own archives. I have since started collecting books, photographs, working on a dream journal which is inclusive of my dreams and others. Researching on colour, reading and listening to podcasts on subjects that I think could be used further down the line. I have found motivation in collecting and working with archives in my own way and Exercise 1 has helped me to understand and navigate how I would approach a project moving forward.
Researching has always been difficult for me, I struggle to focus and link works that inspire me. However, that in itself has taught me that it's something I can work on and into my own practice. I will aim to explore different research methods and ensure I have plans in place for how I will execute my research tasks.
After the first collage, I found a rhythm in how I wanted to collate the pieces I was working on, I made a list on how I wanted to explore different mediums and moving forward I will make sure I have a bigger and better array of options, working with audio, video, painting, drawing, photography etc. Using difference sources and really planning how and what I would like to explore.
I have found planning my study time difficult previously and while this is definitely improving, it's still a problem. I have attempted to carve more time out to do research and hopefully once I have found a system that works for me this will become less of a problem. I am looking forward to working more on the course, and exploring my abilities as a student and artist, I have some reservations as to my abilities in engaging in group work, but I understand the requirements and will work on a plan as to how I can incorporate this into my studies.
